Damon Fouchee won the sportsman of the year category at the 2019 Gauteng North Cycling awards evening in Pretoria on Saturday.
Fouchee, who also won the junior rider of the year award, was recognised for his achievements at both national and international level.
The 18-year-old won a stage and a criterium during a stint in Spain. He was also selected to represent South Africa at the road world championships in Innsbruck, Austria.

“The Gauteng North awards is a special evening for me as all the riders in the region are rewarded for their hard work and dedication through the year. To be invited to be part of the evening was a huge honour for me,” said Fouchee.
“I was surprised when I received the award as the region’s sportsman of the year. All I can say is that I’m truly grateful to have received this and for all the support.”
Aside from the 36 riders who earned regional colours in the XCO, XCM, track, road and time-trial disciplines, the following riders were also awarded trophies for their achievements last year:

Most improved male rider: Brandon Skews

Male track rider of the year: Gert Fouche
Female road rider of the year: Juanita Venter
