South African cyclist Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) has taken the top overall position for the Tour Down Under after the fifth stage ended in Victor Harbor, Australia today.
“It’s fantastic to lead the race going into Willunga. I’m chuffed at all of the work the guys have been doing, it’s been fantastic,” said Impey.
“We did exactly what we planned on the climb. Lucas set a hell of a tempo up there, there was only 10 guys left so we had a very select group. I was praying that group would make it to the line because I fancied my chances there.”
Taking the stage five win was Italian cyclist Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT Pro Cycling), followed by Simone Consonni (Cofidis, Solutions Crédits) and Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) in second and third respectively.
Impey placed tenth on the day, with fellow countrymen Ryan Gibbons (NTT Pro Cycling) coming in 11th and teammate Stefan de Bod coming in 41st.
