Despite suffering from a side stitch, Byron Munton managed to successfully defend his U23 title in the individual time-trial at the SA National Road Champs at Swadini Forever Resort yesterday.

“I’m happy with how I managed to ride the ITT considering I had a stitch,” said the 21-year-old, who beat Marc Pritzen by more than a minute in the 36km race.
“It’s the first time I’ve been able to push through it and still do a decent ride.”
Munton said he knew it would be super important to pace the course correctly.
“With the first half being more suited to bigger powerful riders, the end part was better suited to myself.
“I had to hold back at the beginning so as to not burn out, and then give my all for the last half.”
He added that it was a tough day in the saddle, especially given the nature of the first part of the course.
“I’m extremely happy to have taken the title again and can’t wait to show off the jersey in the next TT.”
Regarding tomorrow’s road race, Munton felt it would be very unpredictable.
“I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to get on the start line on Sunday morning.”
