Devin Shortt will kick off his 2020 season when he takes part in his second Tour of Good Hope, which starts in the Paarl valley on Monday.
“I don’t have any goals really. I’m just gonna do the best I can for the team and myself with AC/DC Luso as it will be my first race of the year,” said the 21-year-old.
“I’ve been looking forward to see how my base has been. I’m far from where I can be, but I’m excited to blow out the cobwebs.”
The first time Shortt took part in the five-day event was last year and his best result was placing fourth in the queen stage.
“We haven’t chatted much with the team about how the race is going to unfold, but I’d be more than happy to work for Chris [Jooste] as I believe he’s been working hard.”
He added that he would have a look at the Cape Town Cycle Tour after the Tour of Good Hope.
“I’ll asses how my race legs are, but at the moment I’m unsure of my legs so I have no expectations yet.”
Shortt, who is racing for AC/DC Luso during his time in SA, will form part of the Telco.m-On Clima-Osés team in the near future.
“They are based in Pamplona, Spain, and I’ll be going over next year for the full season after Tour of Good Hope and the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
“I really want to win a few races this year and I think it’s more than possible, so I’m looking forward to it.”
He added that his goal for the season was to win.
“My ultimate goal is still to be a WorldTour rider.
“Stefan de Bod is a perfect example to anyone who wants to go from racing in SA to the WorldTour.”
He felt that every year he was learning more and becoming stronger and now it was time to put that into practice.
“I think being in this new team will allow me to be in a place where I can have the help of the team on a much more regular basis.
“That is really important.”
