What started out as a routine training ride ended up as a nightmare for 18-year-old Stehan Wolmarans when he was attacked by a knife-wielding robber in Hartbeespoort yesterday afternoon.

Wolmarans went out training at about 11.50am and cycled through town to the old sewage works district road behind Xanadu Nature Estate.
“Around 12.45pm I was about 5km out on the district road in the direction of Pretoria and I saw a guy walking on the side of the road.
“I found it strange due to the fact that I’ve never seen anyone walking on this road, but I didn’t make anything of it. I just kept focus on my training.
“I greeted the guy and he didn’t greet back. I thought ‘ah well, he didn’t see me’ and just as I passed him he grabbed me from behind and pulled me off my bike.
“Yes I went slowly past him. It was a sandy section. But nevertheless he pulled me off my bike, took my phone and then he started to attack me.”
