The eight-day Cape Epic mountain bike race, which kicks off at the University of Cape Town on Sunday, will go ahead as planned despite coronavirus concerns.

This was announced by the event organisers this morning.
They said that “at this stage, the SA National Department of Health does not propose altering arrangements for public events, and therefore we will be proceeding with the Cape Epic as planned.
“As we near race day we want to reiterate that the health and well-being of our riders, crew, volunteers, partners, host communities and staff is our primary concern.
“As with every edition of the Epic, the team has been hard at work developing and refining its operational plans with local authorities and agencies over the past year, including relevant safety measures and protocols which have been heightened over the last few weeks.”
The event organisers said they implemented a comprehensive safety plan each year and had built on these measures based on recommendations and guidelines from the various health institutions.
“This includes implementation of additional on-site event safety and precautionary measures, as well as education and guidelines for event staff and volunteers at race-venue locations to follow.
“These safety measures promote the daily practise of hygiene-protective measures recommended by the World Health Organisation to prevent the spread of germs.”
