On Monday night, Ramaphosa announced that from midnight tomorrow South Africa will experience a 21-day lockdown, forcing citizens to remain in their homes and only leave when absolutely necessary.
According to a Facebook post, the PPA has urged all cyclists to adhere to the lockdown guidelines.
“We know that cyclists are frustrated that they cannot take to the roads for the next three weeks but as a nation we now need to stand together to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus at all costs,” said PPA chairman Rens Rezelman.
The social media post says it is important to adhere to social distancing in order to prevent the coronavirus from spreading further and infecting more citizens.
“It is important that all cyclists adhere to the president’s request. This is our only hope to overcome the tragedy we are faced with.
“As avid cyclists it is extremely frustrating to all of us not to go cycling but we all have a responsibility towards our families, friends and fellow South Africans to strictly adhere to the government’s announcement of lockdown which includes recreational outdoor sport.
“Please remember that all sport and recreational activities across the globe are affected by the COVID-19 virus and we as cyclists just have to wait this one out.”
Rezelman said the government could not make exceptions regarding the lockdown and urged that cyclists do their best to stay fit in their own homes.
“Let’s stay off the roads and make a worthy contribution to winning this battle against this deadly virus.”
