As the 26-year-old is not on medical aid he could not be taken to the local private hospital and was instead rushed to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
“He was placed in ICU and the care he has received from these specialists has been phenomenal,” said Burg Wheelers Cycling Club’s Gillian Bure, who created a BackaBuddy page for Deacon which to date has raised more than R120 000.
“News we received was that it was touch and go and he was put under an induced coma so that his body could cope with the trauma while he was sleeping.
“This last weekend he was weaned off the drugs so his body could function on its own. He recognises his family but at this stage cannot walk or talk.”
Bure is on a mission to assist Deacon, who recently started his own cycling business in his home town. She intends helping him in his journey back to health and providing financial assistance too.
“His parents and family are devastated at their son’s injuries and we can ease their financial burden by sharing Callan’s story and his recovery.
“No one knows how Callan will be in future and to what level his body will function. We can only hope and pray that he will fully recover.
“What we do know from the specialists is that he will take some time as he progresses in his journey as he will need extensive physio and speech therapy.”
