Organisers of the Adriatica Ionica Race are putting all their focus on the 2021 edition after having had to cancel this year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The five-day Italian stage race was set to take place from June 14 to 18, and while the UCI has only blocked racing until the end of May, the organising committee decided to cancel the 2020 event anyway.
“There is no point in waiting for some more weeks,” said organiser and former world champion Moreno Argentin.
It would have been the third edition of the event this year. The race is known for its technical features that test riders with fast or high-mountain routes and Flemish-style cobbled or dirt paths.
“Right now we can’t see a decent chance to organise the event in a suitable environment, either for the safety of the public and athletes or the great uncertainty due to the outbreak, which will result in a hard and longer economic crisis.
“Theoretically we could ask for a new date in the last quarter of the year, but it is unlikely it would be a good choice.
“Local authorities and our partner companies have other priorities at the moment.
“It’s much better to focus on a new start in 2021. We are aware that after the coronavirus nothing will be like before, and cycling will not be an exception.”
