After been given the green light to resume training following a horror crash six months ago, Remco Evenepoel has wasted little time in confirming his major goal for the 2021 season.
Evenepoel fractured his pelvis at the Tour of Lombardy last August after hitting a bridge wall and plunging 30 feet into a ravine.
He was finally given the thumbs up this week to get back on his bike by his Deceuninck-Quick-Step medical team.
The 21-year-old, who has been dubbed the heir to cycling legend Eddy Merckx, was quoted in Belgian newspaper Dernier Heure-Les Sports as saying he wants to return to competition at the year’s first grand tour, the Giro d’Italia.
“The objective is now that I am ready to resume competition on May 8 (at the Giro d’Italia),” he said.
“When will I be in shape? May 8!”
UCI and European junior road and time-trial champion in 2018, Evenepoel won all four stage races that he took part in last season, including the Tour of Poland.
He was due to start last year’s coronavirus-delayed Giro in October before his crash ruled him out of action.
Should he compete at the Giro from May 8-31 it will be his first grand tour.
