The Alpecin-Fenix team of UAE Tour stage one winner Mathieu van der Poel has sensationally withdrawn from the race ahead of Monday’s stage two.
The UCI ProTeam made the announcement in a social media post after one of their staff members returned a positive Covid-19 test.
Last year’s UAE Tour was cut short when a number of teams contracted the coronavirus.
Van der Poel sprinted to victory in Sunday’s opening 176km stage to take the overall leader’s red jersey, but won’t take to the start line in Monday’s 13km individual time-trial.
