This forest track, circular route is a 19km moderate to hard ride which starts at the Krisjan Se Nek picnic site and winds its way through the Homtini Forest.
Permits are essential and are available from Thesen Island Office or the Goudveld Entrance gate at R35 per adult and R18 per child under 13.
Meerendal Trail has an easy to medium grading and is designed for riders of all levels of experience.
The route consists of three inter-leading trails – 5km, 12km and 18km, and can take up to two hours to complete.
Meerendal Wine Estate also features a 4km kiddie, 13km intermediate and 17km advanced route.
The Attaquaskloof Ox Wagon Route situated in the Western Province is a must for serious MTB riders.
There are two route options you can choose from, a 35km and 120km circular route which both start at Bonniedale Farm.
The terrain varies from mountain fynbos, steep climbs and precarious downhill stretches on both single and jeep tracks.
The Dunkeld Country Estate is just three hours outside of Johannesburg and is found just behind the picturesque town of Dullstroom, offering outdoor enthusiasts 36km of manmade trails which encompass numerous bridges and streams stretching over vast areas of prime country side on single track paths.
The Estate is situated at 2076m above sea level which is great for those cyclists looking to train at high altitudes.
There are three trails to choose from, the 8km Blue Forest Trail which is a scenic route traversing over single track and is set within the highest point in the Estate at 2080 meters above sea level.
The 15km Orange Mountain Trail is aimed at the intermediate to advanced riders and is a tough route with some steep climbs and gnarly descents with a great mix of single track and bridge crossings.
The 13km Green Trout Trail features a few water crossings and some beautiful forest terrain with some fast and furious sections.
The Estate also offers visitors an array of other activities which include fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting, archery, horseback riding and bird watching.
Thaba Trails is located in Rietvlei 101-lr, Johannesburg, in the Gauteng province.
On offer is a technical and challenging 30km ride with adrenaline-pumping downhills on single track.
There is also a Yellow route which has a distance of 14km and is not as technical. It is an endurance ride on jeep track.
The office is open on Saturdays and Sundays and routes can be ridden from 6.30am until 5pm every day in the week.
There is an annual membership option available for R450. For entrance fee riders can phone the office.
The Big Red Barn situated minutes from Centurion is a mountain biker’s haven with a variety of trails with varying lengths to choose from.
There is 27km “Blast off” trail for the more experienced riders, a 16km “Easy Rider” trail suitable for beginners, 12km fast free flowing trail and even a 4.2km suitable for children under adult supervision.
Other family activities available at the Red Barn include Acrobranch and trail runs with a restaurant and picnic spots available on site.
Tickets for adults are R45pp and R25 for kids under the age of 12. There are also MTB guides available for hire.
The Norm-Hudlin trails are situated in Kragga Kamma, Port Elizabeth.
There are 3 route options to choose from, the 30km which is suitable for all skill levels, 15km or 10km.
The terrain is Singletrack, sandy patches.
Entry is R10 during the week and R20 on weekends.
Wilton Guest Farm is located a short distance off the N10 between Somerset East and Paterson.
Riders can look forward to “Classic Karoo Mountain Biking” divided into four trails: green, blue, red and black.
The Green trail is a non-technical, family friendly 29 km ride which takes in some of the sights of the farm including the river and a beautiful dam.
The Blue trail consists of 23 km of slightly more challenging terrain while the Red trail is a 38 km ride covering all the more challenging sections and visits all the scenic portions of the farm.
The Black trail is a combination of the Red and Green Routes into a 45 km ride which will appeal to the more active riders.
Situated on the scenic South Coast of KwaZulu Natal and just an hour away from Durban, Rocky Bay Trails offers visitors the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life by offering an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including mountain biking.
The Rocky Bay Resort MTB Trails, based on Ellingham Estate Farm, were opened in 2011 and offers both novice and experienced riders the chance to take advantage of the great tracks and scenery along one of the four varying trails, the 11km; 19km; 27km and 36km.
All riders are required to obtain an entry permit to the premises which is obtained at the Rocky Bay Resorts security gate.
Other activities visitors can choose to participate in include running trails.

Set in the Vredefort Dome just outside Parys is where you’ll find the Berakah Eco Trails.
The dome itself, originated from a meteorite which struck the earth and is a geological structure with a central core of granite-gneiss, surrounded by steep rock formations which forms the mountainous area.
The Berakah Eco Trails are famous for mainly 4×4 and quad bikes with some paths suitable for mountain bikes and trail running.
Distances vary with a choice of 6km to 14km routes set in jeep track and rocky terrain with maps available at reception.
Bookings are essential and fees are R30 per bicycle with accommodation available.
The Misty Valley Mountainbike Park and Trail Centre is located near Machadodorp in Mpumalanga.
The Park features ten routes with varying difficulty to accommodate riders of all experience levels.
Camp Shaka MTB trails has various trail options available from 7km to 35km.
The terrain varies from dirt road, tar road and jeep track and is graded as a moderate ride.
Sabie caters to both the novice and accomplished riders with 5 different MTB trails to choose from.
You have the easy 6km Yellow route, the 15km Green and 25km Blue routes for the intermediate riders and the 13km Black and 30km Red routes for the experienced riders.
All riders need to have a permit to access these routes, which are R30 for 1 to 2 days per person and R60 for 2 to 5 days per person.
This dirt road MTB trail which is the only road between Rustenburg and Hartbeespoort, is set in the magificent Magaliesberg countryside.
Cyclists can take advantage of a 50km plus distance ride starting from the Hekpoort Petrol Station or tryout the 10km trail from Sugarbush Hill Cottages.
The grading is intermediate to difficult, with riders choosing to use this route in training for the cycling events like the Magalies Monster – you can also pre plan your ride options by referring to the Automobile Association’s Magaliesberg Map.
Other attractions include Sugarbush Hill hiking trails and a multitude of restaurants and shops to browse through and relax in.

3Rivers Trails consist of a network of trails in the Thornhill area of the Eastern Cape. Each location features between three and six routes.

Crazy Dave’s Bikepark offers five different lines, including a dual slalom and kids pump track. It is located in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Located between Middelburg and Groblersdal in Mpumalanga is the Ruby MTB Trail which runs over seven properties in what is known as the Forever Resorts Loskop Country.
This trail is a challenging ride with portions of technical track suitable for the more intermediate rider.
There are child friendly tracks, short cuts that avoid the more technical portions and options to extend the distance on farm roads, this trail starts at the Ruby Cliff Horse Ranch, a Forever Resort and ranges anywhere from 14km to 40km’s.
The trails are open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset with free access to those staying at the Forever Resorts in the area and R50 for day visitors with bookings via the Loskopdam Resort essential.
An array of other activities are open to all staying at the resorts.
Just 2km outside Groot Marico lies Riverbend Farm which boasts a 28km self-determined or 30km trail.
The terrain is mostly Single and Jeep track with a few water crossings. This is for the more experienced riders and is graded as moderate to extreme.

The Avianto MTB Trails are situated within a scenic rural area around Muldersdrift in Gauteng. The trails are situated by the Aviano Clubhouse and offers two route options, a 6km beginner’s course on mainly jeep tracks and gravel roads and a 17km intermediate course with a handful of single track sections and some challenging climbs.
Mankele, established in 2007 and situated in the heart of Mpumalanga boasts a variety of outdoor activities for the whole family.
There are a variety of well marked trails to suit all fitness levels, the Adventure zone is a 2.4km flat track, 5km Blue Route suited to beginners, 4.5km Pink Route for the intermediate rider, 8.5km Orange Route which is technical and used for Nationals Cross Country, 20km Green Route which is moderate to hard, 1.8km Black Route, 35km Red Route which extends off the Green Route, 55km Purple Route which is for the advanced riders, 1.8km Down Hill not for the average rider and Black Dot Routes along the way.
Other attractions other than accomodation include rafting and paintball.
Mankele is open seven days a week from 6:30am to 6pm, with a strict no helmet no ride policy
The Vlei Park MTB Trail is situated in Rietvlei and boasts an array of trails suitable to all levels of riding expertise.
You will find colour coded trails from the 4km Yellow trail for beginners, an 11km circular Jeep/Single/Forest track all amalgamated for the more intermediate riders and lastly, the blue and black trails which are for the more advanced riders.
The venue also has a day picnic facility and caters for various functions from birthdays to team-buildings.
A single ride entry is R25, Multi entry (10) is R150 and Annual Loyalty Membership is R960.
Ultimate Cycling Knysna covers a variety of cycling needs from bike accessories, spares and bikes to mechanical work.
Other services include weekly shop rides, cycling advice, bike hires, specialised training and friendly service.
