Earlier this month Sir Bradley Wiggins revealed that he would not be part of Team Sky for the Tour de France, which will be built around last year’s winner Chris Froome.

Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, Eurosport’s cycling ambassador, said: “My first reaction to the news was disbelief. I think it is a big risk not to take him and a decision they will probably regret.
“There are no assurances in this race, there is a lot of potential for things to happen, especially with the 15km cobbled section in this year’s course, and so I don’t understand why they would take just one of the two.
“Clearly the decision has been made because Bradley is riding well and has the capability to win, but why not take them both and take first and second place?”
He added: “I can’t believe there is not a place for a former Tour de France winner in the team, as Bradley would be better than many of the other riders Sky has. If he is not in form it will quickly show on the road but I believe he is riding well, has got his confidence back and has got over the stress of winning in 2012.”
