The KwaZulu-Natal Autumn Series is set to launch three brand new UCI Category 1.2 road cycling events for Elite and U23 Men and Elite Women at the end of April and beginning of May.
The first of the UCI Cat 1.2 events is the brand new Freedom Day Classic, which will take place on Freedom Day on April 27 and will start and finish in Pietermartizburg’s Alexandra Park.
The next UCI Cat 1.2 event is the Maritzburg Margate Mayday Classic, which will start in Pietermaritzburg and finish in Margate via Ixopo, on Worker’s Day on May 1, covering a distance of 203km and is only open to Elite Men/U23.
The third and final event is the Hibiscus Coast Cycle Challenge and will take place in the southern coast town of Margate and also comprise UCI cat 1.2 events for both Elite/U23 men and women.
The veteran, junior and youth categories will compete in their own event as part of the KZN Autumn Series on Saturday May 2 in Margate.
The three new UCI-rated road cycling events further entrench Pietermaritzburg as UCI’s Africa Bike City with the continuous ensemble of high-quality UCI cycling events being hosted in the capital city since 2009.
Pietermaritzburg is set to host the African Cycling Forum in August and the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in September.
