The Belgian rider put in a determined attack but was caught in the final 3km by Team Cannondale-Garmin’s Dan Martin and Team Bora-Argon’s Emanuel Buchmann in the final 3km.
Pauwels MTN-Qhubeka team mate Jacques Janse van Rensburg was the first South African rider across the line in 26th position today.
Team MTN-Qhubeka improved in the team classification today, moving from ninth to seventh position overall.
Team Tinkoff-Saxo’s Rafal Majka won the 188km stage today, while Team Sky’s Chris Froome holds onto the yellow jersey in the overall classification.
