The entry process for the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour will now take the form of an online ballot system to give riders a fairer chance of getting an entry.
The move is in line with international best practice and aims to eliminate the rapid sell-out of entries for the 35 000-strong race.
From 1pm on September 9 to 25, potential entrants will be able to register their interest free of charge. This will be preceded by an early-bird ballot, which will allow the Pedal Power Association to randomly allocate 5 000 entries to paid-up members.
According to director of race organisers David Bellairs, the early-bird ballot honours PPA as founders of the event.
“Those who are unsuccessful in the initial PPA ballot will automatically be added to the general public ballot, giving them an additional chance to be awarded an entry.”
Last year entries sold out in a record time of eight hours.
General entries will no longer be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, but will instead involve a three-step process. Corporate group entries will also no longer be available but limited entries will be made available via charity groups.
Would-be riders can register their expressions of interest at www.cycletour.co.za during the specified time.
Successful applicants will receive confirmation emails in the week of September 28 and will have until October 26 to make payment.
