Top South African mountain bikers Robyn de Groot and Erik Kleinhans are eyeing the women’s and men’s titles at the inaugural Fedhealth MTB Challenge at Meerendal Wine Estate in Cape Town on September 6.

National marathon champion de Groot said she would be racing hard and had ridden the Meerendal route twice this year.

“It has incredible mountain bike trails and an awesome venue in terms of hospitality and family enjoyment.”
Kleinhans said his goal was always to finish on the podium in any event.
“The riding terrain is mostly through fynbos with shorter, steeper climbs and single-track everywhere. It is super fun and exactly what I like to see in a mountain bike race.”
He will face challenges from the likes of Xterra racer Stuart Marais and former cross-country masters world champion Nico Pfitzenmaier.
The 60km race forms part of the Isuzu MTB Festival Cape Town, which also offers 35km and 15km distances for the more social riders.
