Organisers of the FNB Wines2Whales mountain bike event will continue their support of the Botrivier Education Foundation with the annual fundraising race, the Botrivier Van der Stel Pass Challenge on October 23 and 24.

Wines2Whales director Johan Kriegler said the event was proud to make a difference in the lives of youth in Botrivier and the surrounding areas.

“The foundation’s objective is to assist pupils who show an academic drive and potential, to further their studies at universities and colleges.”
Coordinator Dr Anthony Hess, who was born and bred in the town, said the BEF was established as a volunteer organisation in 2005 and aimed to motivate students to study in the fields of engineering, accounting and medicine.
“We take the pupils from as early as Grade 8 and nurture them through their schooling career and hopefully into an institution of higher learning.
“Our mission is to develop a community to one day see at least one graduate in each household.”
Hess said the aim was to develop the community as a whole.
“The financial assistance received from Wines2Whales helps us with transport costs, accommodation, registration and educational excursions.”
The Botrivier Van der Stel Pass Challenge comprises running and walking events, with distances varying from 5km to 21km, and mountain bike events between 15km and 60km in length.
