South African rider Rourke Croeser voluntarily withdrew from the UCI World MTB Championships in Andorra last weekend after being found in possession of a syringe.

Rourke Croeser withdrew from UCI World MTB Championships after he was found in possession of a syringe.
Croeser was found to be in direct contravention of the ban on injections under the UCI medical rules. The mere possession of a syringe, regardless of the substance it contains, is in violation of a medical rule.

According to UCI rules, any results obtained by Croeser within 48 hours of the infringement are automatically disqualified.
In addition, under this ruling, the whole national team – which includes James Reid, Phil Buys, Sipho Madolo and William Mokgopo – could be excluded from the race if it is found to be appropriate.
According to the rules, “the exclusion may be decided by the president of the commissaires’ panel after having given the persons concerned the opportunity to be heard or by the president of the UCI Disciplinary Commission upon report by the president of the commissaires’ panel.”
Cycling South Africa will now deal with the matter according to the prescribed UCI procedures.
CSA president William Newman said the national body would not tolerate any infringement of UCI anti-doping and medical rules. Newman said CSA would continue educating cyclists about the medical rules.
