New trails add excitement to Ballito Expedition

October 22, 2015, 3:37 pm By Coetzee Gouws

With the addition of some exciting new sections to the routes for this year’s event, the Bestmed Ballito Expedition promises to keep families entertained and serious mountain bikers on the edge of their seats come November 14.

The event has come a long way since starting on a half-built trail at Hero Adventure Park at Sugar Rush in 2013, and route director Darren Herbst is very excited about the possibilities the new route holds.

“Many sections will be similar to last year. Much of the terrain and features will remain the same, with the exception of some awesome new sections of Holla Trails that have been added,” said Herbst.

Most of the route will still run through the host venue, but new sections of single-track and jeep-track from the neighbouring bike park will bring some exciting additions.

“The combination of jeep- and single-track will come with a couple of big climbs in the feature race,” he said.

“We’ve added some sections of forest for both the shorter and longer distance and riders can look forward to some amazing views of the surrounding area.”

While the shorter 25km route will feature some tough climbs to reach a total ascent of 400m, the route is still manageable and promises a fun experience.

The longer and tougher 50km route will climb a total of 900m to showcase some of the most spectacular views of the area surrounding Ballito. Waterpoints and viewing points will offer riders the opportunity to stop and take in the vast beauty of the trail.

Participants in both races can look forward to sections of sugar cane, open fields, farm trails and some fast-paced, winding single-track.

Riders keen to add some speed to the mix will test their skills on long winding descents, especially on the longer route, allowing speeds in the region 50km/h for those brave enough to try.

“We are really excited about all the little changes and additions to the event that will truly showcase the beauty of the area and the fun riders can have in KwaZulu-Natal and specifically Ballito,” said Herbst.

Besides the mountain biking action happening at the Ballito Expedition, riders can also bring their families and friends along to enjoy other outdoor activities on offer at Sugar Rush, as well as some great food and drinks available after the races.
