Jarlinson Pantano of Colombia won the 160km 15th stage of the 2016 Tour de France between Bourg-en-Bresse and Culoz today.
The IAM Cycling tour debutant beat Polish climber Rafael Majka (Tinkoff) in a sprint to the line after the pair had gone clear during two ascents of the Colombier mountain leading up to the finish.
Frenchman Alexis Vuillermoz (AG2R) beat Swiss rider Sebastien Reichenbach (FDJ) to the line to take third on the day. They were followed by France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-QuickStep) who suffered a mechanical while leading with less than 20km to go.
Pantano won the final stage of the Tour of Switzerland and finished fourth overall directly before the start of the Tour de France.
Majka, a former winner of the king of the mountains competition, took over the lead in the climbers’ competition from Belgium’s Thomas de Gendt.
Britain’s Chris Froome (Sky) was hardly challenged and remains in the overall lead, 1:47 ahead of Dutchman Bauke Mollema and 2:45 in front of Brit Adam Yates.
Colombia’s Nairo Quintana, who has finished runner-up on both occassions that he has ridden the tour, currently lies in fourth, 2:59 off the pace.
