The death of Egyptian cyclist Eslam Nasser Zaki rocked the opening day of the African Continental Track Cycling Championships at the Cyril Geoghegan Track in Durban today.
The 22-year-old Zaki was riding on his own in the Elite men’s omnium-tempo race when he suddenly fell off his bicycle.
Despite the immediate attention of the medics on hand and prolonged attempts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead.
Cycling South Africa has expressed their deepest sympathy to his family and teammates.
They added that every effort was being made to assist the Egyptian team at this tragic time.
