Even though the ascent is not that demanding, ASG Events operations manager Darren Herbst has warned cyclists to be prepared for a challenge when the Bestmed Wild Coast Sun MTB Classic takes place on December 9.
Having worked on the trails alongside local route specialist Ian Wilson, Herbst said their objectives were to offer a genuine mountain biking experience for the event from the Wild Coast Sun near Port Edward in KwaZulu-Natal.
“The 40km route has some amazing views and is manageable,” he said. “But don’t be fooled by the relatively low degree of ascent.
“There are some challenging climbs, but riders will enjoy it if they have a bit of fitness under the belt.”

The 20km race consists of mildly technical trail, including 435m of ascent, and is rideable throughout.
Organisers ASG Events have joined forces with the Wild Coast Sun to ensure a quality event, with the emphasis on family participation.
The event, which adds a 2km route and a 200m toddlers’ section to the long distances, will start and finish at the Wild Coast Sun.
ASG Events chief Wynand de Villiers said they were “pulling out all the stops” with Sun International to ensure a memorable occasion.
There will be entertainment on and off the bike, with participants having free access to many of the facilities at the Wild Coast Sun and receiving a 50 per cent discount voucher to the water park.
“It’s all about having fun on the trails and then having fun with the family afterwards,” said De Villiers.
