Former All Black flyhalf and Lions, Sharks and EP Kings coach Carlos Spencer will team up with adventure rider Clinton Mackintosh in Dimension Data’s Masters Category for the Cape Epic in March.
Former Springbok World Cup-winning flyhalves Joel Stransky and Butch James will also participate in the eight-day race.
“Let’s hope they [Stransky and James] are better on the mountain-bike than they were on the rugby pitch,” Spencer quipped.
Having spent several years playing and coaching in South Africa, “King Carlos” is no stranger to the country.
“I’ve heard so much about the Epic and how awesome it is,” Spencer said today. “For me, it’s more about the personal challenge.
“It will be great to compete in such a tough event while taking in some of the best scenery in the world.”
Mackintosh, a five-time Cape Epic finisher, said the popular Western Cape stage race had become more competitive in recent years.
“It has become tougher every year to finish in the top 100,” he said.
“Our main goal is to finish and enjoy every moment, but we are both very competitive, so it should make for eight days of fun.
“I enjoy technical riding, so we’ll hope to take advantage in those areas over the other teams,” he added.
