The Mitchelton-Scott rider lost out to BMC Racing Team’s Richie Porte by eight seconds, but did enough to take the yellow jersey from Bora-Hansgrohe’s Peter Sagan heading into the sixth and final stage tomorrow.
“I’m stoked, I can’t believe it,” a delighted Impey said after the race. “I’ve put in a lot of work for this race and to deliver like this for an Australian team in Australia is magical.
“I’m super proud to just hold onto the jersey right now. I’m thrilled,” he added.
Fellow South African Nicholas Dlamini, who rode for Dimension Data, came third in the King of the Mountains category, but had still managed to secure his overall lead ahead for the final stage.
Stage six tomorrow will consist of a 90km street circuit in Adelaide City.
