Matthys Beukes and Ariane Lüthi won the 121km Attakwas Extreme MTB Challenge from Oudthsoorn to the Great Brak River today.
Beukes and Gert Heyns took the lead heading up the King of the Mountain (KOM) hot spot, before the latter took the KOM prize. Philip Buys was closely following in third at the same point.
Beukes surged ahead to take a solo lead by almost four minutes ahead of teammate Buys at the 85km mark. Tim Bohme was in third, just over three minutes behind Buys.

Momesen Bikes’ teammates, Dylan Rebello and Marco Joubert, were coming in fourth and fifth respectively.
Beukes sustained his lead and calmly led the race going through the last water-point with about 15km left.
Bohme moved up to second at the water-point, seven minutes behind Beukes, with Buys dropping to third by two minutes.
The PYGA Euro Steel rider had enough in the tank to win by a sizeable margin. The victory was his second Attakwas title, after first winning it in 2012.
In the women’s race, Sabine Spitz won the Queen of the Mountain (QOM) title, before Lüthi led at the 85km mark.
The top three women started dispersing, with Luthi having held an eight-minute lead over Stenerhag, with Yolande de Villiers in third by another nine minutes.
Lüthi contained her lead at the last water-point, ahead of Stenerhag and De Villiers. Sabine Spitz was riding in fourth.
The Team Spur rider increased her lead and surged home to secure her sixth Attakwas Extreme title.
Daniel van der Walt won the 52km Attakwas Mini MTB Challenge, ahead of Leon Claassen and Tristan Nortje.
Charlissa Schultz won the girls’ race, beating Zare Coetzee and Carine Gagihro.
