The Mitchelton-Scott rider’s teammate, Caleb Ewan, won the 148.6km race from Unley in 4:03:55, with Bora-hansgrohe’s Jay McCarthy in third.
“The boys put me in a perfect position again and backed me 100 per cent even though some results weren’t perfect for us,” said Ewan.
“So for them to back me on a stage that doesn’t even suit me, it means a lot.”
The Australian leads the overall standings in 7:54:00, followed by six-time SA time-trial champion Impey and Ewan’s compatriot, McCarthy.
DiData’s Nicholas Dlamini retained the King of the Mountains Jersey with 20 points.
Tomorrow’s stage has been shortened by 26km due to a forecast of extreme heat.
Race director Mike Turtur said the safety and welfare of the riders, spectators and everyone involved with the race was always their primary concern.
“We consulted with rider representative Adam Hansen (Lotto Soudal) and our chief commissaire, and both agreed it would be sensible to shorten the stage distance.”
