Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski won the 188km second stage of the Volta ao Algarve in Foia, Portugal, today.
The Polish climbed to victory on the Foia Mountain, a 15.2km ascent leading to the highest point in Algarve. He completed the hilly stage in 4:49:51, beating Trek-Segafredo’s Bauke Mollema (Netherlands) and teammate Geraint Thomas (Britain) into second and third respectively.

DiData’s Ben King (USA) won all four category climbs, as well as the intermediate sprint, before him and Bora-Hansgrohe’s Lukas Pöstlberger broke away until the final climb.
The chasing peloton caught up with nine kilometres to go when Team Sky’s Vasil Kiryienka (Belarus) jumped and took the lead.
Kiryienka was caught by the field with less than two kilometres to go. His teammate Kwiatkowski jumped through on the final bend to win the stage.
DiData’s Louis Meintjes (South Africa) finished 11th and is currently 10th on the general classification.
His compatriot Willie Smit, who rides for Katusha-Alpecin, reportedly crashed out of the race and sustained a fractured collarbone with about 30km to go.
