At the start of the season the Support SA Talent Project launched the Road Cycling Series, which was developed in order to recognise and develop South African road cyclists.
The series extracts results and allocates points based on these results in various categories from all of South Africa’s top one-day classics, multi-stage races, as well as the national road championships.
Following eight events so far – the Mpumalanga Tour, Fast One Cycle Race, national championships road race and time-trial, 99er Cycle Tour, Ride for Sight, Berge en Dale and Herald Cycle Tour – Calvin Beneke and Carla Oberholzer lead the overall elite standings.

Beneke has been prominent on the road scene so far this season, featuring in all but two events.
He finished fifth overall at the Mpumalanga Tour – including a stage win – third at the Fast One, sixth at the national champs road race, fourth at Ride for Sight and second at Berge en Dale.
Oberholzer has been in red-hot form recently, winning three consecutive races in as many weeks at the national champs road race, Ride for Sight and Berge en Dale respectively. She also finished fourth at the Fast One just over a month ago.
