Jason Oosthuizen was the first South African to cross the finish line after the 83.2km stage one of the Tour de Taiwan in Taipei City today.
Team coach Bonga Ngqobane said their plan was to sit in the front and to avoid any crashes.

“We also wanted to get Eddie [van Heerden] in a good position as our general classification man.
“The rest of the team’s job was to make sure we don’t lose the race and do our best to control as we know the first stage is always tricky due to not knowing who has the best legs yet,” he said.
Unfortunately Van Heerden was involved in a crash, but quickly climbed back onto the bike and linked up with the bunch again.
