Dimension Data’s Kent Main won the 137km third stage of the Tour of Good Hope, which took place in and around Paarl today.
Team DiData made a clean sweep on the podium with Main’s teammates Stefan de Bod and Italian Matteo Sobrero finishing second and third respectively. Both Main and De Bod completed the race in 3:39:56.
A third of the way win, 18 riders made a break and created a 20-second lead.
Stage one winner BCX’s Nolan Hoffman was first through the second hot spot, followed by Randwater-Transnet’s Shameeg Salie and teammate David Maree.
Yellow jersey Stefan de Bod suffered a mechanical and began upping the pace at the 80km mark – the same point where Maree and Pieter Seyffert made a slight breakaway.
The peloton all came together again at the 94km mark.
They stayed together for the next 20km, before Hoffman was first through the third hot spot as well. He was followed through by Maree and Alfa Bodyworks-Giant’s Rohan du Plooy.
The bunch stayed together heading up the Du Toitskloof Pass, before 10 riders made a break with just a few kilometres to go. After the field began breaking up further Main, through good support, crossed the finish simultaneously with De Bod.
Sobrero followed, beating ProTouch’s Gustav Basson by seconds into fourth.
Stage two time-trial winner Ariane Luthi, who rides for Team Spur, won the women’s race in 4:20:40. She beat Team dormakaba SA’s Carmen Buchacher by a mere second and Lucy James by six.
