Tour of Good Hope results & GC: Matteo Sobrero wins stage four

March 8, 2018, 10:46 am By In the Bunch

Team Dimension Data’s Matteo Sobrero won the 143km fourth stage of the Tour of Good Hope, which took place in and around Paarl today.

The Italian won the race in 3:38:42, beating ProTouch’s Reynard Butler and BCX’s Clint Hendricks into second and third respectively.

Just 25km in, heading up the Du Toitskloof Pass, nine riders – BCX’s David Maree and Chris Jooste, ProTouch’s Jayde Julius and HB Kruger, DiData’s Kent Main and Stefan de Bod and Rickardo Broxham – made a break.

The peloton all grouped back together again at the 46km mark. BCX’s Nolan Hoffman was first through the hot spot.

Main won the final King of the Mountains challenge, with De Bod and BCX’s Marc Pritzen having followed.

At the 105km mark, 13 riders made a break, before it was reduced to eight with just eight kilometres to go. Sobrero then managed to outlast the rest in the final stretch.

Yellow jersey Ariane Luthi won the women’s race in 4:40:57, beating Team dormakaba SA’s Carmen Buchacher and Catherine Colyn into second and third respectively.

The field began stringing out extensively near the top of the Du Toitskloof Pass, where Luthi suffered a mechanical.

She managed to pace her way back again, as the bunch got back together by Slanghoek Valley.

With just seven kilometres left, Luthi, Colyn, Buchacher and Lucy James put the hammer down. They managed to create a two-and-a-half minute lead from the bunch to ensure they would not be caught.

Luthi won in the final sprint between her, Buchacher and Colyn.

Both De Bod and Luthi retain their respective leader’s jerseys ahead of the fifth and final stage tomorrow.

Rickardo Broxham won the junior men’s race in 3:39:33.
