NAD Pro’s Gawie Combrinck and teammate Nico Bell enjoyed yet another win on stage seven of the joBerg2c, which finished at MacKenzie Club in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, today.
Combrinck described the 82km stage from Underberg as the “most fun” in the race so far. “The trails were just so super fast and flowing,” he said.
“We had a blast out there today.”
Combrinck said he felt the competition had worn the riders down after seven days of racing.
“I think everyone is starting to feel the week of racing,” he said. “I feel like everyone is beginning to get tired.”
He said the race began splitting up around the 20km mark, which was when they, Matthys Beukes and Insect Science’s Alan Gordon and Timothy Hammond broke away.
“About halfway through the stage, on one of the single tracks, we managed to gap Alan and Timothy.
“We kept our pace and maintained our lead from there. I got caught out by a puddle that ended up being much deeper than it looked, so I had a bit of a swim.
“Other than that it was all about not colliding with any trees,” he said of the challenges.
In tomorrow’s last timed and competitive stage, Combrinck said they would approach matters the same way as with the others.
“We will just try to stay out of trouble and get to the finish line in one piece.”
