The team’s sport director JP Heynderickx said knowledge of the parcours was very important for a race featuring about 35 short, sharp climbs.
“We have a couple of riders who know the parcours in Tom-Jelte Slagter and Serge. Last week the latter was in really good condition and he’s ready to put in a big performance in the coming weeks,” he said.
The Amstel Gold Race forms part of the Ardennes classics, which differ from the previous Cobblestone classics.
Riders will be presented with a zig-zagging 260km course and the African team is in confident mood and generally in good form.
“From [tomorrow] on we are starting a new kind of races. We did a recon of the last 70km of the Amstel Gold Race on Friday,” said Heynderickx.
Slagter and Pauwels will be joined by teammates Scott Davies, Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier, Ben King, Johann van Zyl and Jaco Venter.
