Silverback-Volvo’s youngest rider, Luke Moir, won stage one of the under-16 Internazionali d’Italia XCO Series in Nals, Italy, yesterday.
Moir, 15, was part of a leading trio – alongside an Israeli (Nadav Amar) and a Swiss rider (Lars Sommer) – for most of the race, before the South African made a decisive attack with two kilometres to go on the final lap to win the race by 27 seconds.
“The race went really well,” Moir said. “I had a bad start but I stayed near the front for the majority of the race.
“The course was quite basic, with just one long uphill and one technical downhill. There were a few punchy climbs and some very slippery routes where some riders fell away. However, I managed to ride on.
“The race was quite tactical between us [the leading three] with many attacks, but I just remained calm and attacked on the last lap.
“I am really happy to get an international win for Volvo and Silverback Bicycles.”
Moir will now set his sights on the second Proffix Swiss Cup in Schaan, Switzerland, on April 21.
