South African Daryl Impey claimed victory on stage one of the Criterium du Dauphine that finished in Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert today.
The Mitchelton-Scott rider, who also moved into second overall, completed the 179km course that started in Valence in a time of 4:24:26.
Quick-Step Floors’ Julian Alaphilippe followed him home, with Bora-Hansgrohe’s Pascal Ackermann in third.

“I surprised myself because in the end, I found myself in a good position and I went with 200m to go,” said Impey.
“I had no plan, and even when the team said in the meeting that I might go for stage, I thought it was far-fetched.”
He added that to have won at the Dauphiné was a nice step in his career. “I just kept fighting to the end, it was nice to show myself that I could be there.”
Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski leads overall in 4:31:51, with teammate Gianni Moscon third.
