Pieter Korkie is hoping to step up to the top tier of the podium at the three-stage Y2Karoo Race in Colesberg, Northern Cape, this weekend.
Korkie finished second to Marc Fourie last year, ending almost three minutes behind on the final general classification.
After claiming his second consecutive title at the Platberg Classic MTB Race last weekend, however, Korkie will be looking to replicate that result this weekend.

Fourie is competing again this weekend, but Korkie said he was up for the challenge.
“I’m definitely seeking that top spot this year,” Korkie told In the Bunch.
The race comprises a 25km sundowner first stage, which will start late this afternoon, followed by a 72km route tomorrow and 74km final challenge on Sunday.
Korkie said he learnt some lessons from last year’s race. “Last year I underestimated the first stage,” he said.
“It is very short, but very technical. I lost a lot of time there last year and that’s where I fell behind initially.
“This year I’m more prepared and I will try to make sure not to lose too much on the technical sections.”
The next two longer routes, he said, would suit him better. “Saturday’s route will probably be the biggest challenge for many of the other riders, but not for me.
“We will be heading into a [24km] section called Jurassic Park which is very rocky and has some steep climbs.
“Getting flat tyres or suffering other mechanicals could play a big part. If you can get out of that section unscathed you can breathe a sigh of relief.
“Sunday’s route is more flat with many fast open roads. Both stages should suit me, but in saying that I’m also quite well prepared for the first stage this time round.
“I certainly hope the competition is ready,” he quipped.
Korkie will be watching Fourie closely at this year’s race, describing him as having “very few weaknesses”.
“He’s quite strong on the technical sections because he is a cross-country type rider.
“But he may fall behind on Saturday and Sunday and that is where I feel I can be strong.
“I’m feeling very confident.”
