Steven van Heerden won the 97km Fast One cycle race in Meyerton, Gauteng, today.
Van Heerden won in his debut race for Vandergroup, which gained Continental status late last year.
The 25-year-old came out on top in a eight-man sprint finish, beating OfficeGuru’s Travis Barrett and TEG Procycling’s Louis Visser to the line.

An early break, comprising Van Heerden, Casper Kruger, Myles van Musschenbroek, Travis Barrett, Dylan Girdlestone, Kent Main, Louis Visser and Sias Joubert, got away and retained a narrow lead.
By the 40km mark the break extended their lead to just over two minutes. The bunch began to split up at around the 60km mark as the breakaway group kept a steady lead, fluctuating to just around two minutes.
The escapees held their own to sprint it out in the final stretch.
Liezel Jordaan won the women’s race in 2:38:58, beating Kim le Court and Maroesjka Matthee to the line.
