The 149.5km stage, which started in Glenelg, was won by Jasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates) in 3:37:00. He was followed by three-time world champion Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Danny van Poppel (Jumbo-Visma).
Gibbons now ranks fourth in the overall standings and trails the overall leader Patrick Bevin (17:00:25) by 26 seconds.
Retaining second place after finishing 19th today, is South African Daryl Impey (Mitcheltin-Scott). He is seven seconds behind Bevin with Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana Pro) in third and 16 seconds behind the leader.
