Team dormakaba SA’s Samantha Sanders and Amy McDougall withdrew from the Cape Epic yesterday after McDougall contracted a stomach bug on Tuesday.
The pair started yesterday’s stage, but withdrew when the illness began to take effect.

McDougall posted a picture of herself under medical supervision on social media yesterday saying in the caption, “The last place I wanted to end today’s stage was here”.
“Got a stomach bug yesterday and thought I’d be able to push through, but my body wouldn’t let me and I was forced to stop,” she continued.
“[I’m] devastated after all the months of focused preparation, especially for [my] teammate Samantha.
“I’m very thankful for such a supportive sponsor and teammate.”
The pair were well on their way to winning the women’s red African jersey before their withdrawal. They held a solid 38-minute lead over Galileo Risk’s Theresa Ralph and Sarah Hill after stage two.
Ralph and Hill have since jumped into the driver’s seat in the quest for the African title.
