A cyclist died during the Cape Town Cycle Tour today.
Event organisers, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, confirmed the fatality in a statement this afternoon.
“It is with deep regret that we confirm that a participant passed away during the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour after collapsing at Smitswinkel Bay,” race director David Bellairs said.
“Our sincere condolences go out to his family. We are respecting the family’s wishes and not releasing any further personal details at this point.”
The event is arguably the largest one-classic in the world based on the number of participants. About 35 000 riders took part in today’s race.
