100 Cycle Challenge: Exciting new race features

April 10, 2019, 1:34 pm By Sponsored

A 50km option in addition to the standard route and a later starting time for the UCI race are two exciting new features at the 100 Cycle Challenge, which takes place from Germiston Lake on Sunday, May 5.

Autumn’s biggest road cycling event draws participants from Gauteng, the rest of South Africa and the African continent. The 100 Cycle Challenge is dedicated to delivering a race of the highest quality in conjunction with Ekurhuleni, the Host City.

Race options

Apart from the traditional 100km for all categories, the organisers have included the 50km option for riders who prefer a shorter distance. See the routes and profiles at www.100cyclechallenge.co.za.

Moreover, the UCI event for male road cyclists (category 1.2 one-day class 2) will now be raced over 130km, culminating with six laps of five kilometres each around Germiston Lake.

The starting time for the UCI race has been moved much later to 12pm to give spectators and riders who have completed their races the opportunity to watch the professional teams making a dash for the finish line at around 2.30pm.

The 100 Cycle Challenge is sanctioned by Cycling South Africa.

Secure parking & race village

All the races start and finish at Germiston Lake with participants urged to park at Germiston High School, the race’s official secure parking area.

A gate between the school and the lake ensures direct access to the race village and the starting line, which is no more than 750m from the parking area.

This year, all categories will line up inside the race village, with each batch proceeding from there to the starting line when called.

Riders are requested to avoid parking in the streets surrounding the lake as the safety of vehicles cannot be guaranteed outside the secure parking area.

Entertainment

The organisers of the 100 Cycle Challenge wish everybody a day of fun and excitement.

At the race village, participants can expect a variety of coffee and food vendors, a craft beer and gin garden as well as South Africa’s purest spring water from deep under the Tsitsikamma mountains.

There will also be stalls by product and service suppliers to road cycling, a safe area for kids, a free and secure bike park managed by Cyclesure and live entertainment on the 100CC stage.

Entry fees

The entry fee is R450 for the 100km route and R300 for the 50km. Enter today at www.100cyclechallenge.co.za – there are only a few weeks left to May 5.

The 100km is open to anyone over the age of 15 while the minimum age for the 50km is 13 years. Timing is by RaceTec.

Development

The 100 Cycle Challenge is dedicated to the development of the sport. This year’s race supports the initiatives of East Rand-based NPOs Ekurhuleni Cycling Club and The Urban Ruins.

The organisers have also extended an invitation to charities and causes to use the event as a platform to raise funds. Participating charities are listed on www.100cyclechallenge.co.za.
