The 102nd edition of the Giro d’Italia, which starts in Bologna on Saturday, will see a new winner and Tom Dumoulin wants to be that person.
Last year’s champion Chris Froome will not be on the start line as he is targeting the Tour de France, where he will aim to wrest back the title he lost to team-mate Geraint Thomas a year ago.
“I don’t know if it’s possible to win the Giro and the Tour the same year but I’m here to win the Giro,” Dumoulin, who placed second in both Grand Tours last year, said.
The Sunweb leader was below par in last month’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège, finishing 50th and describing it “as a bit of a downer”.
Despite that glitch, the 28-year-old Dutchman felt he was in “good condition” ahead of the start of the Corsa Rosa.
“There’s a possibility that I take the maglia rosa if I have the right legs but it’s not in my mind to think what I’ll do if I win the opening time-trial.”
The only South African on the start list for the three-week tour, which totals 3 518.5km, will be Dimension Data’s Ryan Gibbons.
