Fernando Gaviria was awarded stage three of the Giro d’Italia after Elia Viviani, who crossed the line first, was relegated for deviating from his line.
After consulting television footage of the sprint, the jury of commissaires penalised the Italian for an “incorrect sprint” minutes after the stage had finished.
That meant Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ), who initially placed third, moved up to second while yesterday’s winner, Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe), slotted into third.
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) retained the pink jersey ahead of Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) and Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida).
The 220km stage started in Vinci and finished in Orbetello.
