Tom Dumoulin, who placed second in last year’s Giro d’Italia, has abandoned the 102nd edition shortly after the start of the fifth stage in Frascati today.
The 28-year-old Sunweb rider, who won the tour in 2017, finished yesterday’s stage four minutes down on winner Richard Carapaz and overall leader Primoz Roglic after crashing with 6km remaining.
After yesterday’s stage, the Dutch rider said he would decide overnight whether he was fit enough to line up this morning. He ended up starting the stage, but abandoned during the neutralised zone.
“Devastated to leave the Giro like this, but it is what it is. Now it’s time for a small break before looking at what’s up next,” stated Dumoulin on his social media.
