Nicol Carstens won the first stage of the two-day Extreme men’s race at the Bezhoek Extreme Mountain Bike Festival in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, today.
He finished the 89km event in 4:31:37, beating Alan Gordon (4:38:44) and Ben Melt Swanepoel (4:45:36) to the finish.
Theresa Ralph claimed the honours in the women’s race when she finished in 5:20:07.
Alain Slabbert (3:24:36) brought the 68km men’s race home while Waldo Verster (4:04:35) and Piet du Toit (4:42:28) took second and third respectively.
The women’s title went to Thiesa Janse van Rensburg (4:39:40) while Nontobeka Beauty Ngobese (5:27:55) placed second.
The 45km men’s event saw Philip Morkel take the win in 2:36:22. He was followed home by Jaedon Terlouw (2:39:17) and Hendrik Lloyd (3:35:06).
Karlien Trumpelmann (4:03:18) won the women’s race ahead of Sheila Burrough (4:03:59).
