The Ineos rider fractured his femur when he fell during the recon of the stage four 26.1km time-trial in Roanne.
His team stated that he was on his way to a local hospital for treatment.
Froome was using the tour, which concludes on Sunday, as a final warm-up ahead of the Tour de France.
His team also confirmed that he would not ride the 21-stage Grand Tour.
Team INEOS can confirm that Chris Froome crashed during a recon of stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine today.
He is currently on his way to a local hospital and won’t start today’s fourth stage.
