Criterium du Dauphine results & GC: Edvald Boasson Hagen wins opening stage

Edvald Boasson Hagen won the opening stage of the Criterium du Dauphine in Jussac, France, today.

The 32-year-old Dimension Data rider, who placed third overall in the recent Tour of Norway, completed the 142km route in 3:24:33.

Second place went to Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), with Wout Van Aert (Team Jumbo-Visma) third.

“I’m really happy I could manage to take this victory, I was really suffering on these last few climbs,” said Boasson Hagen.

“I managed to make it to the sprint and I had a good sprint. I got the victory and I’m happy. It’s a long time since I had a victory.”

The Norwegian outsprinted the rest of the peloton, who caught a three-man breakaway group as they passed under the flamme rouge, to take the stage.

This trio consisted of Oliver Naesen (AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Cort (Astana) and Bjorg Lambrecht (Lotto-Soudal).

Boasson Hagen also topped the general classification with a four-second lead over Gilbert.
