Wout Van Aert claimed his second victory in a row when he won stage five of the Criterium du Dauphine in Voiron, France, today.
The Belgian, who also won the individual time-trial yesterday, completed the 201km race from Boën-sur-Lignon in 5:00:34.
Ireland’s Sam Bennett was no match for the speed and sprinting skills showed by the former cyclo-cross world champion and was forced to take second.
Julian Alaphilippe crossed the finish banging his bars in frustration to take third.
Van Aert said afterwards he just wanted to do the sprint today to acquire more points for the green jersey but then it turned out he was the fastest and was able to take the win as well.
“It was quite a tricky final with a lot of corners, so we knew it was important to be in the front early,” he said.
“My teammates really helped to bring me to the front. Then in the last one kilometre the whole bunch was in one long line.”
Van Aert sat on Alaphilippe’s wheel when the Frenchman launched the sprint after the last corner.
“I was able to passed him so it was a good sprint for me.”
Britain’s Adam Yates maintained the yellow jersey as he leads the standings in 17:28:00.
Belgium’s Dylan Teuns lies second at four seconds later while America’s Tejay Van Garderen holds third and is six seconds behind Yates.
