Mike Woolnough won the Race to Rhodes, which formed part of the Freedom Challenge, in Rhodes recently.
He completed the 475km, non-stop and self-navigated mountain bike race, which started in Pietermaritzburg, in two days, eight hours and 54 minutes.
Woolnough’s plan was to break the record and finish under 48 hours, but sleep got the best of him on the second night.
In second was Roger Nicholson (two days, 15 hours and 30 minutes), while third spot went to Carlo Gonzaga (three days, three hours and 33 minutes). This was the latter’s first Freedom Challenge event.
Riders were allowed a maximum of seven days to complete the ride.
